Just a quick note.

Got some info today from a colleague who is developing a model that runs on a cluster. Running Win 2003 Server HPC edition (they're part of the beta with Cornell) comparing two 8 node (16-CPU clusters) Dell servers with Xeon 3.06 chips take about 400 seconds per work unit. Whitebox Opteron 244 (1.8ghz) boxes take about 250 seconds per work unit.

Note that the whitebox Opterons cost almost exactly half what the Dell boxes cost (a chunk of that is due to SCSI Dell vs. IDE whitebox).

Unsurprisingly, the HPC edition of windows could use a bit of work (it is, after all an early beta) and these guys really miss using Linux for this kind of work.
