Smith Micro Surges on Verizon Deal

Micro-cap tech player Smith Micro Software (SMSI:Nasdaq) surged 44% Friday after it got a deal to support a Verizon Wireless remote access product.

The Aliso Viejo, Calif., software company said it will support the VZAccess Manager, which it described as "a customizable tool that lets customers manage their remote access needs across the country." The application supports Verizon's evolution data only, or EV-DO, and 1xRTT data services.

Under the terms of an extension to the previous multiyear agreement, Verizon Wireless is offering VZAccess Manager to provide connectivity between the carrier's BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess networks, as well as customers' Wi-Fi technology.

The deal comes on the heels of Verizon's decision to hand a big network upgrade contract to phone-equipment giant Lucent.

Smith Micro jumped 85 cents to $2.72.
