Briefly, the derivative, math function not financial, of 1/x as it goes to infinity does not go to zero so the 2 dimensional line that forms the surface of revolution creates an infinite surface area since there is no end to the end of the paint can.
However, if you determine the volume in three dimensions of that 1/x function, the volume calculation has the factor 1 over x squared which does go to zero as you approach infinity.
