Right now AMD is producing about 7m+ chips a quarter. Of that only about 1m are k8s. I don't think production is the major hold up, rather getting the OEMs, distributors, Mobo makers, chipmakers etc. etc. all on board takes a lot of time.

I don't think infrastructure is the showstopper here. There are some minor problems, such as Socket 939 being very new, and Via chipset being the only chipset offering integrated graphics. But those are minor.

The bigger issue, IMO, is that Hector doesn't seem to want to be selling AMD products at 50% discount to equivalent Intel products, and he seems to be drawing the line on K8.

K8s being 130nm, and somewhat expensive to produce is another incentive not to discount heavily. We will see if Hector maintains this pricing strategy when much cheaper to produce 90nm parts become available.
