my Earthlink cable modem kept going down when I first got it months back...they came out and ran a feed from:

street box to house box
house box to jack
jack to modem

problem turned out to be the "filter" back at the street box, a small cylindrical device that the cable plugged into right before entering the street box, 100% ever since, G/L
