Take a serious look at Ishares Exchange Traded Funds (they trade like stocks)or mutual funds from Vanguard or TIAA CREF.

The mutual funds will allow you to AIM and trade without cost but you need to check if the individual funds have any back end load or restriction to trading once in awhile. But in a small account a mutual fund is more cost efective to AIM
