You describe of many scams. If you use your imagination, there are scams that can be thought out.

The big think with naked shorting is that it creates shares in essence. If shorts don't have to worry about immediately borrowing shares, they can in essence increase the float, the supply of stock. If they act in concert, they know they are setting the stage for others to follow.

I think it works more like this. Naked shorting - post on message boards - others short in more traditional ways, naked shorting hasn't used up borrows so the sheep can come in and short. The naked shorters now seeing the stock down can buy back. THey have the luxury of perhaps waiting a few weeks without covering and don't have to worry about a broker calling in the borrow like you or I would have if we shorted a speculative stock.
