"while free markets are great, everyone acting in his or her own best interest, competitively. but we're in the vicious cycle here: everyone acting in his or her own best interests means everyone trying to throw each other into the abyss so that they themselves can be the last standing. if government has a role, it is to step in now and do whats best for the common good, perhaps at the expense of what is best for fair the various players. "

Herein lies the blind spot of the statists: if you truely believe that everyone has a propensity to "acting in his or her own interest, competitively . . . means everyone trying to throw each other into the abyss so that they themselves can be the last standing," then do you really want to give anyone the coercive power, the monopoly to use violence against his fellow man?

"Government" does not have a brain because it is not a person. Consequently, it is not capable of stepping in or out or doing anything without specific government officials actually doing the deed. Now, do you really want any government officials to "step in" to force you to do things at his discretion carte blanche in the name of "common good"? The TARP program showed how the real world works. It's nothing new. Behind the closed curtains, the high priests have been eating the sacrificial "choiciest lamb" from the faithful peons since at least the old testament time.
