Strangely, the socket 939 chips may fuel a reverse Osbourne effect. Lots of folks have been holding out for socket 939 systems, but now that they see the cost, they may well decide that socket 754 is enoiugh stronger in the bang for the buck category to go ahead and jump on it now.

mmoy, Intel's new Grantsdale chipset will not excite gamers. That isn't the intended audience. It is intended to lower the cost of standard desktop systems by integrating a bunch of features and offering them at a low price. While it raises the bar for integrated system performance, it does not challenge the high end desktops.

This is timed to coincide with AMD's bringup of 90nm, which will make A64 more competitive for the market sweet spot. Intel is defending their position in that sweet spot.
