My impression is that the iPhone/Touch potential as a game platform is great, especially with the App store and the update mechanism they have working.
It has tremendous educational potential, especially for kids similar to yours in age, but also for other developmental levels too, including us!
I wouldn't be surprised to see Nintendo et al go to an App store approach.
I have five games on my Touch.
