US consumer confidence sinks to record low The Conference Board, a business research firm, said its consumer confidence index plummeted to 38.0, down from 61.4 in September.
Most analysts had expected a more modest decline to 52.0.
The government's monthly labor report next week likely will show more than 200,000 nonfarm jobs were lost in October and a further rise in the unemployment rate, Ryding said. The September jobless rate was at a five-year high of 6.1 percent.
