It's called "circular trading" or "wash trading".

Look up the terms here:

http://www.investopedia.com

wash trading: An illegal stock trading practice where an investor simultaneously buys and sells shares in a company through two different brokers.

This increases the activity in the stock and gives the impression that "big news" is about to come ou

circular trading: A fraudulent trading scheme where sell orders are entered by a broker who knows that offsetting buy orders, the same number of shares at the same time and at the same price, either have been or will be entered.

These trades do not represent a real change in the beneficial ownership of the security.
