#12920 RE: Tatari Gami #12917

Actually, that one was pretty early, but my first was Red Barchetta. Learned the bass line on a regular guitar and I scraped and saved for a long time to buy my first bass and amp (still have the bass, btw -- it's about 20 years old now -- a Harmony Marquis short scale POS that I'm terribly fond of), then started learning a bunch of their songs.

I've gotten to a point with Rush songs that if I queue up a song of theirs that I'm familiar with but have never played, I can usually nail the bass line anyway. There are a number of elements of Geddy's style that are (I hate to use this word when talking about such a genius) "predictable" (like the use of minor 7ths) and once they're ingrained, his stuff is usually not too tough to learn as far as the notes go. The fretboard gymnastics take a while, though.

Imagine how ticked-off and relieved I was when I spent so much time trying to master the bass line in "Driven", in vain, only to find out recently that it's 3 bass lines over-dubbed. I knew something was up when I saw them perform the song live and the bass part was missing a few notes, but didn't realize it was because the studio version of the bass line is actually impossible to play. <g>

I like the live version a lot better, anyway, especially since it's got a rare bass solo.
