Strong Nuclear power coupled with renewable sources that are local to the area in which they are used is the answer.

I.E. Arizona/New Mexico makes power from Solar radiation, Wind in the NorthWest (and other locations where wind can be effectively used), Biomass from Corn in the Midwest, Biomass from Wood in the Northeast (And Northwest), Clean coal, Natrual gas, etc...

Now you start pumping out plug-in electric vehicles... Who needs oil?
