The issues in the XLF as of Friday are listed in the link I provided. All but WM were still active at today's close.

I guess replacement issues and or the removal of those issues that have gone belly up and or have been merged must account for the variance...

I would add, that there are a great many companies in the XLF ETF that are not directly affected by the financial crisis, such as Moody's, AFLAC, Chubb and a number of others.
