I don't really think most people believe all that politicians say. We have been lied to so often that it would be foolish to take anything that is said by a politician as gospel.
Unfortunately the way the system is set up, we really only have two choices when we vote.
Things will get worse (especially economically) before they get better but if I truly believed that there was no hope I wouldn't vote at all.
As for true journalism, I don't think that exists anymore. The media is all about ratings and selling papers.
