It's a poorly constructed sentence. The empire is still called 'Byzantium'. It's capital, Constantinople, is now called Istanbul.

Perhaps we can draw some parallels between 1204, when the 4th Crusade was hijacked by the commercial interests of ummm the Doge of Venice? or the wily Genoans? can't remember, anyway, was as I say hijacked and diverted into conquering Christian Constantinople, and Events of Today - with the Crusade Against Terror being hijacked by the wily Cheney et al and diverted into conquering Iraq.

In both cases, results seem to have been suboptimal.

That sounds like a pretty good piece for the NYR or somehwere like that.
