The plant is called vetch. But I'll let this scientist, Dr Max Tate, tell you more about it.

Max Tate: Vetch is a pea-like plant which like pea, is a legume, and it's very high in nitrogen. And the vetch has been around for thousands of years. In the old days it was used in England and Europe extensively as stock feed.
