TREND1, are you speaking of total debt or annual debt.

Since the surplus from the Social Security Trust Fund has been added to the debt, it has skewed the annual numbers.

I think the "official" deficit number for FY08 is supposed to be around $481-Billion, but the amount borrowed by the Treasury in the last 12-months is more like $641-Billion.

That 641 number is about 5% of GDP. I doubt that's mid-range historically unless we're talking about Israel, Argentina, or Japan.
