Actually, what Canada has is more of the Salad Bowl Theory -- not the melting pot. A melting pot is where you contribute and give up your own hertiage to the overall society. A salad bowl is where you keep your own. Kind of like a salad -- each ingredient remains intact whereas the melting pot they each indidivually blend or "melt" together and become something completely new to everybody.
As for citizenship, what you describe is something called Nationalism. Most countries have it. It helps win wars and/or maintain the system of government. Probably something that Canada rarely has an issue with.
We have lots of tiny communities in Toronto that represent every culture there is... some not so tiny.
same here in chicago. there has always been ethnic neighborhoods and most of them have their own festivals and such. but they are always changing as intermarriage and mobility causes them to kind of melt away.
