Possibilities for 32 bit...
Short term...with maybe reduction in die size...make it for $20 bucks sell it for $80 for desktops and $120 for laptops...average ASP maybe $100 net gross $80...times 6 million processors = $480 million gross net while easily selling everthing you make...these would be very smooth 32 bit processors...ka ching...and this is not including the 6 million a64's...

They are HP's crackpot idea anyway and made only for them, something about not wanting to confuse customers ?!? AMD never wanted to do them in the first place so Inq sources say. I fully expect the 1.8 Ghz A33V and the 2.0 Ghz A36V 256Kb Paris parts to be fully 64bit enabled otherwise they would just call them Athlon XP 3200+ and XP 3400+. :-)

and i wonder how either it (32bit version) or the 64bit version will do facing celeron64?

history suggests anytime intel is able to position celeron against amd, celeron wins the volume inspite of benchmarks.

32 Bits - This does imply that it will be(In the future) cheaper for AMD to manufacture a 64 Bit processor and hobbel it, then manufacture a 32 Bit one.

I think that the "one core" flexiable manufacturing is a competitive advantage for AMD, in the arena of Manaufacturing, and R&D.

I think typcially comparing fleaxiable maufacturing to batch runs, has indicated that FM has a lower set-up cost per batch, but higher 'per unit cost'.

This is ideally suited to a segmented market where differentiation allows the manufacturer to maintain margin.

Also it is more difficult to make major strategic errors of product choice, but the volume/Low cost market will be elusive.

Intel are turning notebooks into commodities, in the chip area AMD should play/design for the Server Market and anything else is a bonus.
