low price of oil during the last 20 years caused complacent U.S. to think the S.U.V. / Truck lifestyle would last forever. Auto companies dumb. Economies dictate behavior not government with chicken politicians scared to lead.

Obama: If we don’t get a handle on our energy policy, it is possible that the kinds of trends we’ve seen over the last year will just continue. Demand is clearly outstripping supply.
