That is a good question...I work in IT and when we buy products we make sure it is from solid companies that are financially sound for the exact reason that you mentioned. Companies do not want to get stuck with a product (event if it is good) that has no support if a company goes under. It puts you between a rock and a hard place if no one is around who understands the inner workings.
