Joe, I think the point is that they won't have to do anything - other than a press release. Well, I suppose a BIOS update, too. But Hector's comments made it pretty clear it's a "drop-in" replacement, thus the hardware/infrastructure compatibility part of the comment.

UpNDown, dual cores, the article did say Opteron (and also said 2-P systems as an example). This is a confirmation of socket 940, not socket 939.

Still, I'd be surprised not to see a dual-core, socket 939 AthlonFX eventually. Given Ruiz' style, expect to see a year's experience on socket 940 before moving to socket 939 for this feature.

UpNDown, other than bragging rights, what compelling need do you have for a dual-core Athlon64 or AthlonFX machine in the near future? When it is shipping I'm sure you will want a new motherboard supporting the faster memory available at that time - this will be a very bandwidth-hungry device!

While Ruiz' comments are exciting to enthusiasts, the real beneficiary is the OEM who will have new markets for existing motherboard designs.
