It's a fair question, but I just don't short stocks, period.
I wouldn't be the one shorting on breakaway gaps, but rather selling! If I don't own it, I will wait until it retraces a country mile before I buy - assuming I want it at all.
My basic objection to shorting (and to each his own) is that markets (on average) go up... so do stocks. I always play the broader odds when I invest. I don't have any desire to swim upstream.
My breakaway gap alerts are not particularly to get people to short, but rather to get people to sell what they already own.
