Nextel's Flarion Service in Raleigh Durham
flwright64,
<< The Flarion trial uses MMDS spectrum at 2.5 to 2.6ghz. Spectrum that propagates indoors like a Hyundai through a brick wall. >>
The Nextel Flarion commercial trial in Raleigh Durham just happens to use PCS spectrum at 1900 MHz purchased by Nextel from a licensed PCS carrier.
<< Nextel's Flarion efforts clearly depend on gaining valuable spectrum from the FCC in the MMDS space at 2.1ghz. >>
U.S.licensed MMDS services do operate in the 2.1GHz to 2.7GHz bands and in the WorldCom buy, Nextel acquired spectrum in both the 2.1 GHz and 2.5-2.7 GHz bands in about 50% of the top 50 markets including Los Angeles, Dallas and Washington. Nextel's winning bid in the Nucentrix bankruptcy auction netted them additional spectrum in the 2.5, 2.3 and 2.1 GHz bands, covering markets in Texas, Oklahoma and other midwestern states. Should Nextel take Flarion F-OFDM or WiMax fully commercial it is highly likely that they will do so in cooperation with Sprint to achieve a national broadband footprint by pooling their collective MMDS spectrum.
