current technology is nickel hydride batteries.... However car makers are trying to figure out how to safely put lithium ion based batteries in cars because they are lighter and more powerful. GM says they are going with lithium ion. Toyota delayed installation in the Prius and other models but has announced they are going to transition to lithium ion. I think 2010 is their target.
