the statements you read are taken out of context.
Most options expire worthless ...
also, if you're the writer of options (sold them short)
you make money when they expire worthless.
Also, many people use them as protection (Buy PUTs)
for their Long stock ...
so they want their options to expire worthless.
Those statements that you read and are spread throughout the media
are totally without any substantiation and are just a way
for the media to misdirect people away from such a lucrative medium.
NOW, with that said, newbies trading options with "reckless abandon"
WILL lose their money and speak ill of options for the rest of their lives.
So, if you've studied real well and understand the power of options
and get in slowly and don't throw all your money at it at first
and trade responsibly, then options are much LESS risky than buying and holding stocks!
