it's not generally a big deal to recompile a linux app for OSX, but it is an amount of work greater than zero so sometimes it doesn't happen, sometimes it happens late, sometimes it "sort of happens", revs/libs get out of sync, etc etc etc.

plus going the linux path would provide a builtin watchdog on Apple, lest they be tempted to stray from the current opensource(ish) path.

plus plus, going linux could virtualize OSX away from any particular hardware platform. since its less than a year into the G5 era and IBM is already doing a Moto on CPU delivery, that might not be such a bad idea. not to mention linux already has a 64-bit kernel - there is even a 64-bit linux distro for G5(!) - but where is 64-bit OSX?

just seems a major win-win.
