On the other hand, I suspect that at least a quarter, and perhaps as many as a half, of all folks driving $40K+ cars really cannot afford them and have bought and drive them merely out of a perceived need to showoff.

I would agree with you and bet that most of them are leased.

Or simply rented for a day.

Pricks that need to parade themselves in fancy cars have little else going for them.
