I remember 1974 also, though just a wee lad of 14. The year prior, I wanted to buy my first stock, which was Florida Power and Light. The broker talked me out of it and put me into Atico Mortgage because it was paying 10% dividend. That was good for about a year, then the company went down, and changed into something else, and basically I lost most of my $400 lawn mowing earnings.
But it taught me a valuable lesson, and I have done my own research and buys since then.
Still learning lessons though ...
