Maybe it's just my naivete again but they must have known that themselves.

I would not assume that of Dendreon given all of the reveals in the FDA Statistical Review.

That's why the conjecture of trading reduced power for a more beefed up interim if OBF was in use.

Even if they reduce from an interim of 0.01 to 0.0000000 for the interim I suspect that the increase in final alpha from, say, 0.044 to 0.05 does not compensate for the loss of 60 high value events. Back of the envelope it might compensate if you assumed a constant HR.

It is, of course, legitimate to trade risk for $. So I was perhaps too harsh in condemnation of such a trade - but what irritates me is my guess is that they do not even understand that they are making such a trade.
