Oklahoma has 899 poultry producers who raise 58.7 million birds in almost 3,000 poultry houses in 20 counties, according to Dan Parrish, director of water quality services for the state Agriculture Department. Each of those houses produces an average of about 125 tons of phosphorous-laden poultry waste each year, or a total of approximately 375,000 tons, Gunter said.
