yeah, just like everybody knew what big positions the banks were holding with their sub prime loans... Any big bank has even a special department for venture capital. They invest a certain percentage of their funds in those high risk plays. It is not decided by some loan officer, it is a team who investigates that and most of the time decided by a credit committee. They would not call it a "good gamble" as you mention, but rather a "calculated risk"
