Do you know anything about the council of Nicaea in 325? For me, that was the cork-stopper at the beginning of the middle ages which resulted in the explosion of observational science and the origin of the Enlightenment at the other end.

One other thing I don't think anyone has mentioned in the political discussion.

If, as Bush and McCain argue (and correctly, I think), that this period of history is defined by a battle of ideas between freedom and fundamentalist Islam, who better to represent the West than the most persuasive speaker since Churchill.
