#8974 RE: Data_Rox #8973

DataRox & Eric...

Thanks for the insight and update.

I seem to recall that there is some planned level of convergence by HSPDA and EV at some distant point in the future...maybe that was just hardware capability (building lots of CDMA and WCDMA flexibility on one chip).

One world ...one chip...solves everything....and 3G wars are over.

Bad News: Rob V is BAAACCCKKK.

Good News: The best is yet to come

PS Hope everyone was able to buy additional shares at "$61.XX" this am.

Also...Hear this am that Dr J will be on CNBC Monday am....very early...before Squak Box

3GPP GSM/EDGE and 3GPP 3GSM WCDMA UMTS

<< 1st - HSDPA is NOT compatible with EDGE >>

That's sort of like saying that 1xEV-DO (Release 0 or Revision A) is not compatible with CDMA2000 Release 0, A&B, C, D.

Remember what Mark Smith told ya. <g>

While there is no HSDPA extension of EDGE, they are in fact HIGHLY compatible. That's multiradio. From Release 5 forward the WCDMA RAN meets the GERAN and they attach to the CN using the same Iu interface, and 'R5' IMS supports EDGE and WCDMA and EDGE will offer rich voice. It's wise to remember one thing always. There is no WCDMA without GPRS. It's the bearer, and it's the backbone, and underlying everything in the combined network are the evolved GSM protocols. This is why you heard all the noise coming out of the World Congress this year about the complementary nature of EDGE and WCDMA, and TIM Italy may be the first, but won't be the last to do a nationwide rollout of both. Others will do islands of WCDMA in a sea of GPRS/EGPRS.

For this reason, any 3GSM WCDMA UMTS chipset maker, or wannabe 3GSM WCDMA UMTS chipset maker best be incorporating EGPRS (not just GPRS) into his chipset roadmap.

Best source on the subject is the 2nd edition of this book:

[great book BTW, and worth every penny of the hefty price tag]

Best,
