My father-in-law, Dale Shebilsky, who served in a B24 crew, was shot down on his bomber group's last sortie of the war. He took flak in the hip, so the French underground couldn't smuggle him out, but told him where there was a Russian unit nearby who would turn him over to the American consulate.
When he found them, they took one look at his blond hair and blue eyes and put him in a POW camp with the Germans. He was first tortured as a German, then once they realized he really was an American, he was tortured for allied information. Eventually, they did turn him over to the American consulate.
It was quite a shock to his family, to whom he had been reported killed, when he phoned home.
