#6547 RE: EvilTweety #6544

** BDRR - PET/CT technology is very exciting...

it has been around for 30 years, but only in the last few years have cameras evolved enough to be able to actually use it.

Right now, its the best way to diagnose most types of cancers (either pick them up early, or pick up recurrence early), but soon it will be used regularly to detect heart attacks before they happen, strokes, infections, Alzheimer's...etc...

There are thousands of potential applications in development, being heavily researched now. It is really something out of a Star Trek movie - as we will be able to image almost all physiological processes.

For example, I had a lymphoma patient yesterday, did a PET/CT whole body scan after 1 cycle of chemo. I can tell the oncologist if this patient will recover, or not. Long before the chemo is even finished. This was never imaginable before...

The PET/CT can decide, whether a surgeon can operate or not, and exactly where he has to go, to get all the cancer out. No more guessing.

It's insane...I have teams of doctors coming to my office all day long, asking for PET results to help them treat and manage patients...

Make no mistake, this is a multi-billion dollar industry on the rise...
