Received an email today from Dr. Asakura that says something most interesting to me.
Here is what he says:

As to NIPRISAN, we have done intensive in vitro studies on NIPRISAN for
its effectiveness as seen in attached paper-1. We also studied the in
vivo effect of NIPRISAN using transgenic sickle mice as seen in the
attached paper II. These results suggest that NIPRISAN is a very
effective new antisickling drug for the treatment of sickle cell
disease. We plan to perform clinical trials by the support of NIH and I
will be able to answer your question after we complete this clinical
