FWIW - friend of mine is MS in Math and Computer Science. He is close with an MIT group and they analyzed GAP-up closures once a few years ago. Unless the GAP-up was immediately followed by a gain of more than ten-fold (runaway GAP) they found the chances of a fill within ~ 4 to 6 months to be well over 90%... I believe it was over 95%.

I believe Dart is correct that the MMs know this and will try to fill it sooner rather than later on these penny stocks. My assumption is this happens because it gives them a better chance for making money from orderly gains or orderly declines. Most people with MM-trader backgrounds seem to agree that it is easier for the MM when ther are not a lot of sudden GAPS from the buying/selling pressures.
