SEED big call writing

Origin Agritech Ltd SEED
There has been interesting unusual volume in this Chinese agricultural company today. The stock has realized 22 day volatility well above 200% by swinging wildly between $7 and $15.

Currently near $10, today’s options flow suggests the ride may smooth out as an aggressive seller hit the Jan 12.5 calls more than 5,000 times on the NYSE for $.25 in a trade tied to stock. These calls opened at $.60 today with the stock a bit higher. Open interest confirms this trade will create a new position.

This seller appears to be comfortable wearing the largest open interest position in this thinly traded name along with assuming the unlimited upside risk profile of a short-dated short call position

Periodically I hear about a technology that will deal with the zillions of tires that beg a recycling solution.

SDTH stochastic buy

am readding
updating my consideration that SDTH has a presence in agricultural chemicals...just not sure how much:
"Coal Based Chemicals

The company manufactures coal based chemicals including ammonium bicarbonate, liquid ammonia, methanol and melamine. Ammonium bicarbonate is used for nitrogenous fertilizers .."
http://www.cnanalyst.com/sdth.html

"ShengdaTech Inc. (SDTH), a leading producer of nano precipitated calcium carbonate [NPCC] and other chemical specialties. NPCC is used worldwide as a filler for tires, paints and other industrial products and the company has several patents for their method to produce these ultra fine particles. For the first time in 2006 the company reported revenues of $72.6M.

According to Yahoo the 2007 EPS is expected at $0.49 and the estimate for 2008 is $0.64, yielding a P/E of about 27 now and a forward P/E of 20. But chances are high that we will see a stronger earnings growth.

The Yahoo estimate is based on an EPS growth of 30% YoY (0.64/0.49), but for the past two quarters SDTH has shown an average YoY EPS growth of more than 50%. The company increased production capacity significantly during the first half of 2007 which makes a higher top line growth very probable. At the same time productivity (operating and net profit margin) increased continuously QoQ, so the bottom line should grow even faster. The operating margin increased from 22% in Q2/06 to 31% in Q3/2007 while the net profit margin increased from 22% to 29%. These numbers indicate that the Yahoo estimate may be overly conservative. "

2008 Pick(s) of the Year contest: Conclusion

Getting out early made Stuffit the winner with his PDS sale
In at 15.58 on 12/28/07 and out on 4/5/08 at 23.93 for an annualized gain of nearly 200%.

Shmoulton picked FRPT at 5.02 and scored the best % gain for a yearlong hold when it closed at 5.98 on Wednesday.

The last congrats for a positive pick go to our hostess, Ico, who chose the gold trust GLD at 83 on 12/28/07. It closed at 86.52 at yearend.

Noone else had a positive pick.

35 of the 52 symbols lost over 1/2 their value during 2008.
The obvious lesson from the past year was to be nimble, humble, and NOT subscribe to buy & hold.

Hope everyone has a terrific 2009.
