As far as demand for bottled water in China, according to a recent CNBC report on 12/10/07, 700M people drink contaminated water in China with 200M getting sick from it. China’s GDP is going up 10% a year and most of those who lived in poverty just 3 years ago are now lower class citizens. In 2005, China’s bottled water growth rate was 20.9% or 2.5X that of the US. China’s per capital annual consumption is only 2.4 gal. compared to 23.9 in the U.S. Inflation of 6.9% in china has come from food cost which climbed 18.2% from a year earlier, alcohol rose 4.1%. In some counties it is cheaper to buy a beer than it is water (St Martin), so I looked into prices and found that bottles usually come in liters. In China, the cost to buy a beer is $ 3.50US for a L. The cost to buy a L bottle of water is $ 2.50US. A can of Coke is $ 2.20US.
