There was a rather telling quote - probably in the NYT's report yesterday, but i don't have time to check. One of the consumer advocates said, paraphrasing, "It's tough to face the fact that we don't have a cure for metastatic BC, but throwing Avastin at patients and saying here. try this, based on such flimsy evidence of benefit as we've seen today really isn't helping anyone."

Good for her, say I. If the public is learning to be skeptical of the "miracle drugs" that at best give them a couple of months, then the industry will have to focus on therapy that does more than that. Sure, there's a chance that baby steps are our best bet towards making significant progress, but the amount of money being extracted for such baby steps is unsustainable. If there isn't a better model than the current one for therapeutic advances, aren't we in trouble?
