It's always good to drive costs down but the benefit pails compared to driving ASPs up. The difference between a 200mm and a 300mm fab is only a couple of bucks a die. That's very important for low price products but not so significant for high priced CPUs. The real advantage is capacity in my view. For the capitol outlay you get 2+ fabs for the price of one. Nice if you have the demand for your products but only of a minor advantage if there's little demand. AMD seems to have poor demand for their product line at this time because they can't sell a single fab's worth of CPUs, either that or very poor yields. Either could change and will have to if AMD is to stay afloat.
