AMD has claimed that they do more of a gradual development than Intel does. The first 65nm process was supposed to use the same transistor as the last 90nm process... then they do another 65nm process with an improved transistor... then they do a first generation 45nm process with the improved 65nm transistor... etc...
AFAIK, based on product performance so far they are still using the 90nm transistors on the 65nm process. This says quite a bit about where they will be on 45nm.
