Time will tell how non religious civilizations fare. Note that Denmark still has a state religion, wikipedia notwithstanding, it is not a totally secular nation, yet. But religion and spirituality tends to ebb and flow. Good times tend to leads to a loss of interest in the spiritual, tough times brings a revival of interest. Or as often stated, there are no atheists in foxholes.
Appearances can be deceiving. Eons ago, when I was still in school, there were a number of academicians lauding the success of the Soviet Union's economic system. Of course, it wasn't at all successful and eventually imploded. But for fifty years, the communist system appeared to be functioning adequately. The standard of living couldn't match Americans', but there did seem to be economic growth. The Soviet and Chinese stories showed that market based economies way outperform centrally administered economies. But lessons hard learned in one era, sometimes need to be learned again in later periods.
