#26956 RE: SemiconEng #26954

Let me S P E L L it out for you.

Windows and MacOS are NOT ISA compatible or interchangeable in any way.

AMD64 and IA32e ARE. In fact Intel will benefit from all the work done for AMD64 on linux/solaris etc and AMD will benefit from any ass-kicking Intel does on the driver front. Face it x86 now partly belongs to AMD. AMD has zero fear now of being marginalized on its bread and butter ISA. Is that such a difficult concept to grasp ? This is the second best thing that AMD could have hoped for, the first being that Xeon would remain 32bit. :-)

God how can you quote examples that PROVE my point ???!!!

SemiconEng, Xerox PARC. They were too stupid to patent the windowed interface. By the time Apple popularized it they could not enforce their patents because of prior art.

Intel will do fine with their iAMD64. A lot depends on AMD's 90nm rollout - if that goes smoothly then Intel will be looking at an entrenched player in some major markets they used to have to their own.
