There's a few HPC applications that have been successfully run on gpus, I posted a sc05(6?) pdf on one some time ago although there are obvious limits to what you can do with single precision. The turning point maybe the RV670 and G92 both of which are rumored to have double precision ability which will open up a lot more apps to them and make cpus really have to fight to keep apps.
