Armed attack at Nigerian EA field
22-Oct-2007
In an attack on two support vessels, seven individuals working for contractors to Shell were taken.

Basil Omiyi, Country Chair for Nigeria, sent the following message to EPG (EP Africa) staff:
"There has been an attack on two support vessels in Shell's EA field. A large group of armed men attacked the vessels and took away seven persons including four Nigerians and three expatriates (British, Croatian and South African) working for contractors to Shell. There were no fatalities and staff in the field are being evacuated.

We are concerned for the safety of the contractor staff and our thoughts are with them and their families at this difficult time. We are also cooperating with the government, and their employers and supporting efforts for their safe release.

You will recall that we suspended operations at EA in February last year. The contractors were engaged in maintenance work on the FPSO Sea Eagle preparatory for re-manning."

The EA Field is offshore Niger Delta (Bayelsa State). It has a 115,000 barrel per day capacity and has not been producing oil since production from the Sea Eagle Floating Production Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) was shut in February last year, due to security concerns in the area. The Sea Eagle is moored some 16 kilometres offshore in water depths of about 25 metres.

The EA offshore field is operated by SNEPCo and came on stream in December 2002 as part of an extension of oil and gas production activities in Nigeria's shallow offshore by the partnership involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), The Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Elf and Agip.
