We can't make a fair world for our children all the time, if your older kid makes a better cake, with better ingredients, faster, more reliable and tastier, dude, he deserves more of the pie, younger kid can work harder, make a better pie, and maybe put two pies together and make a new and tastier pie, the kid learns that innovation works.
If you get a free ride because you are little and you just aren't as good yet, then you expect a free ride forever, if you want to teach your children to be winners, then you let them fail, they learn there are smarter, better and dumber, lesser kids and where they fit in, and what they can strive for, on their own, you cannot be independent and make it on your own if the government (mom and dad) give a free ride.
